FUN is huge & can be totally underrated. Here’s how Walt Disney & his family rated FUN & it came to mind with the art, THANK YOU!: Spring Cleaning for the Soul by Joy Krause, pages 126-7
Welcoming Mustard Stains.
Aunt Mame said, “Life is a banquet & most people are starving to death.” Thelma Howard taught me that at life’s banquet, one of the main ingredients is fun. Kicking up our heels in life helps keep us from kicking our heels at life.
Where was I when Walt Disney advertised for a cleaning lady?
I know where Thelma Howard was. She was chain-smoking while thumbing through the classifieds when she spotted Walt’s ad. The rest, as they say, is history. She called for an interview, got hired, & for the next thirty years she cooked dinners for Walt & the gang, washed their dirty socks, & kept things humming along. She became part of the Disney family & they loved her.
Thelma, who the family called Fou-Fou, died a few years ago with $8.5 million dollars worth of Disney stock tucked away neatly in a shoe box – accumulated gifts from birthdays & holidays.
What extraordinary housekeeping skills did Thelma possess to win a place in the Disney family’s hearts? In the news clipping Walt’s daughter, Diane, explained. “Thelma was fun. She always made sure the refrigerator was filled with hot dogs.”
Hot dogs! She gives them hot dogs & they give her 8.5 million bucks? Either there was something special in those hot dogs or Fou-Fou stumbled across one of life’s greatest secrets:
It isn’t what’s being served on the table of life that matters. What counts is how we dish it up.
I discovered, thanks to Thelma, that what unites a family isn’t gourmet dinners by candlelight, but small, happy, shared times together- hot dog & bean moments. . .
Thank you very much Heather! and Lifeway!
