Welcome back! We hope this first week of study helped you see the “why” behind our worship. We know God will continue to show you through this study how we worship in different seasons of our lives.
If you have any questions about how this study works, we’ve answered most of them here.
Catching up? That’s okay! We’ll leave the videos up until August 15, 2017. After that time you can purchase the video sessions here.
Questions to answer in your group or in the comments below:
- How do we resemble God? How do we not? (page 18)
- What are some of your nicknames? Tell us the story behind one of them. (page 20)
- What stood out to you about the covenants in Day Four?
Before we get back together, complete Week Two: The Desert (pages 34-65) in your Bible study book. We’ll meet back here next week!
1. We are made in God’s own image. I believe we love, show compassion, and have feelings for others. I believe we do not resemble God in the fact that sin impacts our life. 2. Coco is one of my nicknames. My niece started calling me that when she was little and it stuck. I love it! 3. I love that when God made a covenant with his people… He kept it. Yahweh… The Deliver
1. We are like God in that we are creative and we love everything to be new. We are not like Him when we are destructive and selfish.
2. My only nickname was really Kashka, from my mom who is Polish.
3. My favorite covenant has always been Abraham’s because he was asleep! How much more responsibility could God take?
Did anyone else notice in the Genesis readings that when God gave the command not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, Eve had not yet been created?
Kathy, so interesting! I had not noticed that before. There are lots of ways to interpret the events in Genesis 1 and 2 (and how they repeat), so that would definitely be something to research!
Elizabeth, while I have in no way researched this at all, I wondered if that was Adam’s job to tell her. Then, perhaps that was the reason Satan tempted her rather than Adam. She knew the command but had not actually heard it from God Himself so Satan was more easily able to twist God’s words and to deceive her. Much the same position we have in the world!
That is fascinating. I never noticed that before. Thanks for sharing your observations. Very thought-provoking.
I had also noticed that before. I also assumed that Adam had told Eve since she knew that she wasn’t supposed to eat it. We aren’t told but perhaps God told her as well.
1) We were made in God’s own image and we have the opportunity to model Christ so awesome. Our sin nature gets in the way though. I thank God for loving me so much that He sent His Son to die for me. 2) My nanny and papa always called me sissy to this day I’m not sure why but it filled me with joy to hear them call me. 4) All started by God, all unconditional, all to make our life better.
1. We have control over some things but not perfect control. We tend to mess things up while God rules in perfection. We have the ability to love and care but it’s not perfect. God’s love is perfection.
2. In boot camp my CC called me Gomer (as in Pyle) because I was from NC and so was he. So he had a great time picking on me. My favorite other name that I am called is Mom!
3. I found it interesting that God is always the initiator of the covenant and most of the covenant’s were not conditional.
1. We resemble God in our abilities and desires to love, think, create, etc, but we are different from him in that our hearts are corrupt with sin.
2. Weirdest nickname EVER…but as a little girl my family called me “Bucket” because I loved chocolate SO much, that they said I was like Charlie Bucket from Willy Wonka! My name is Sarah, so “Bucket” is nothing like my actual name!
3. I will say the thing that stood out to me the most about the covenants we studied was that God was always the initiator. He makes his promises to us without prompting. He is the covenant keeper, creator, and maker! What a reason to praise Him!
Much love to all of you sweet girls. I love studying alongside you.
1. We resemble God through our character – we are capable of love, mercy, forgiveness, goodness, etc. We are different from Him physically. And only God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent.
2. Never really had a nickname except Kel. My dad calls me babe, which makes me feel loved. It’s a name I use with both my sons.
3. What struck me about the covenants is how many there are! I knew about most of them, but had never listed them all side by side. Isn’t God great to provide us with reassurances of His goodness and faithfulness??
I think we resemble God in that, we have a sound mind, spirit of power and love for others! Praise God! However, his ways and thoughts are so much higher than ours, he knows the future and that we are dust. I take comfort in that! I noticed that no matter what covenant or how faithful the people, GOD always kept his word. I was called Lizzy by my dear cousin Judy and her family! We spent many great years together! Praise God! She is now with Jesus and the Father!
1. We are made in his image, and we are different because we don’t have the power to do what He does. 2. Beaniebaby is a nickname that I tend to go by. It all started when I was in elementary school and a friend’s father had a hard time pronouncing my last name so he just started to call me Beanie and I just added baby at the end of it. 3. That no matter what we do God will hold up His end of each and every covenants that He has made and that is reassuring because of the promise that we have in Christ and the promise that we will not die but live.
We resemble God by being created in his likeness with soul, spirit, mind and body. We can think, reason, make choices, experience any and every emotion, and connect with others.
We don’t resemble God because we are sinners, we make wrong choices, we don’t love like God loves and so many other ways.
I was referred to as Patty growing up. The list of covenants was interesting to me, especially the Edenic and the Noahic ones. I don’t know that I thought about the Covenant of “Grace” as a covenant, but all that Lauren listed was helpful to process through. I’m sure there will be much more to come.
The Covenant of Grace was a new one for me, too. I’ve heard those verses called “protoevangelium” (the first gospel) many times. I think I like Covenant of Grace better! 🙂
I think we resemble God because we were created in his image but I think we are different from him because we sin and are not as forgiving as him.
My favorite nick name is tember and the only person who calls me that is my husband it started 20 years ago when we met and he still at time uses it, however my favorite name is mom because after being told I would never have kids i have three beautiful children.
What stood out most with the covenants was that God initiated them which shows he wants us and contact with us
Love your nickname. My husband shortens my name to Reece often as well. Aren’t husbands great?! I also love being called mom. What a blessing for you.
