In 2019, we’ll provide a monthly reading plan centered around our blog theme for 2019: This Is Discipleship. We wanted to go ahead and provide the August reading plan for those of you that like to print it out and have it ready for the first day of the month!
Most of us still live fairly comfortable Christian lives in America. We call ourselves Christ-followers, regularly attend church, and live our faith out as we want without fear of reprisal or persecution. However, this is not the case for many believers in other parts of the world who, as you read this, are putting their lives on the line to contend for the faith. Their experiences with suffering and persecution remind us that following Christ is costly—for all of us. We may not be threatened with physical harm or death at this point, but we are called to die to ourselves, to lay aside our agendas and plans to follow Him.
Deitrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian and pastor who was imprisoned and executed for his involvement in efforts to overthrow Adolf Hitler, said it like this: “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die. It may be a death like that of the first disciples who had to leave home and work to follow him, or it may be a death like Luther’s, who had to leave the monastery and go out into the world. But it is the same death every time—death in Jesus Christ, the death of the old man at his call.”
We pray as you read these passages this month, Christ’s sacrificial call will be clear and you will gladly deny yourself and take up your cross daily to follow the Savior.
