Whether you are new to the Bible or have been reading God’s Word for a long time, understanding and gleaning new insights from Scripture is not always easy. There are many different formats and types of Bibles that are created to help people have a better grasp on the Bible as they read. One of the most unique and recent tools for people to use to study the Bible are Scripture notebooks. We are going to look at three ways Scripture notebooks can help draw you deeper into God’s Word.
Scripture Notebooks are easy to travel with.
If you find yourself wanting to take your Bible to a coffee shop, small group, or church, you will normally be lugging around a fairly heavy book. Most Bibles are well over 1,000 pages and can quickly swell up in size depending on the number of study notes and other tools that can be found within the Bible itself. Fitting your Bible into a purse or backpack is not always ideal, especially if you want to avoid damaging the cover.
If you do have a Bible that is in a smaller format, you will usually find that the Bible has really small print or has no room for note taking space.
Scripture notebooks are split up to only cover at most two or three books of the Bible. Most of the time they are in a paperback format with a larger font size (the CSB Scripture Notebooks have a 12 point font size which would be equivalent to most Giant Print Bibles) while still having generous lines to take notes as you read. These notebooks fit easily into a purse or backpack without weighing you down and are perfect if you are wanting to focus on a specific book of the Bible instead of needing all 66 individual biblical books. They also are very nice if you are at a location such as a coffee shop, where you have limited space on a table as they are not quite as bulky as a full Bible.
Scripture Notebooks are a great option to help follow along with a sermon.
It can be very easy to go through an entire worship service and not remember anything from the message that was preached. I have been guilty of doing this many times. Keeping the mind focused and remaining attentive is challenging.
Having the ability to jot down notes while the pastor is speaking is useful in maintaining focus and glean insight that you may not have been able to easily see during your personal time in God’s Word. Journals, margins in your Bible, and even material churches give to their attendees can serve you well, but Scripture notebooks are an excellent tool due to their compact size (noted above) and the wealth of space to take notes.
It is rare to find a Bible with enough space to write down the notes that I am wanting to capture while someone is speaking, even many journaling Bibles, and I don’t always refer back to the material that churches give out to take notes on. By using a Scripture notebook, you can naturally review the notes that you had taken previously from a sermon when you go to read through that particular book of the Bible during your own devotional time in God’s word.
Scripture Notebooks can help when preparing to teach.
Whether you are preparing a sermon, teach a Sunday school class, or lead a small group, it is always important to study the text beforehand and gather the key points you want people to focus on.
Using a Scripture notebook can be a powerful tool to write down all of the information you are gathering from the text along with any other useful insights you find in study Bibles, commentaries, and other study tools. Once you have written down the wealth of information you have found on a particular passage, you can then begin to sift through the information and find the key takeaways that you want to focus on.
Like I mentioned in the second point, you can enjoy reading through your notes when you are reading through or needing to teach on the same passage.
Lastly, I want to point out that God’s word is incredibly powerful, and I am by no means suggesting that Scripture Notebooks should replace a full Bible. These are a wonderful tool to use alongside your Bible as you look to grow deeper in your relationship with the Lord. Drinking deeply of Scripture helps draw us closer to our Heavenly Father and allows us to become a better representation of Christ. I believe that there is no greater joy than that!
